Week 3- Weather

Welcome Back to Week 3- Weather

This week was filled with hands-on activities and we had so much more we wanted to do, but just ran out of time.

We started out by listing the weather words we new and talked about the different kinds of weather in each season. We also talked about some of the crazy weather we have and some of the crazy weather around the world. We learned about what meteorologist are and how they study the weather. The students were each able to build a different tool that helps predict the weather. Below are some pictures of the students and their weather instruments. We were able to build a thermometer, barometer, anemometer, rain gauge, and tried to do a demonstration about rain clouds and another on lightning.

We also read the book "Little Cloud" by Eric Carle. Using that as inspiration, the students were able to use cotton balls and make their own cloud design and write about their design. We learned about the three main types of clouds and what they look like. Below are pictures of their cloud designs.

The student also did lots of weather math. They counted rain drops, read the temperature, put umbrellas in order by size, and many other math activities. Below are pictures of the students working hard together on math.

We finished up the week with two big things. We started off by going to WCSH 6 and meeting Todd Gutner the best meteorologist. He gave us a tour of the studio and introduced us to some of the people we see on TV.  He did two live broadcasts that we got to watch. He showed us the two studies and the students were able to explore and ask him questions. The students really enjoyed using the green screen, using the clicker to change the picture, and practicing pointing in the right direction.  They also got to use the weather computers and practice being a camera person. It was all very neat.

After our field trip, the students came back and worked on acrostic poems about crazy weather around the world. Once they were done writing, they read their poems in front of the green screen and the final product is below.

It was another great week at learning camp with all sorts of activities and a great field trip. Please feel free to share this with family and friends to let them know what we have been up to.

Next week our classroom will transform into the international space station and our young learners will become astronauts in training!
